Meet Robert Smith: Championing Growth, Curiosity and the Next Generation

Variety, problem-solving and helping people develop are what keep Rob passionate about the construction industry. Whether it’s tackling complex projects across the UK or mentoring future chartered professionals through Quantem’s APC programme, he believe’s there is always something new to learn.
We caught up with Rob to discuss the industry’s biggest challenges, the importance of investing in people and a couple of quick-fire questions to get to know them a little better.
What originally attracted you to the construction and property sector?
For Rob, it was the diversity of the role that first sparked an interest and it’s still what makes every day different. “The variety of workload and challenges offered on projects. I also enjoy having the opportunity to see the UK (and get paid for it).” No two projects are ever the same, providing fresh challenges and opportunities to learn throughout a career.
What do you see as being the biggest challenge facing the sector today?
Construction continues to operate in an increasingly uncertain environment, with economic and political pressures creating challenges across the industry.
“The biggest challenge facing the construction industry currently is the continued volatility within the market being created by geopolitical tensions, continually changing prime ministers and the heavily regulated residential sector, making project viability difficult to work.”
Despite these challenges, adaptability and innovative thinking continue to create opportunities for businesses willing to evolve.
Why is developing the next generation so important?
Supporting emerging talent is something Rob is particularly passionate about, and it’s an area where they believe Quantem excels.
“We are very fortunate to have fantastic young talent at Quantem who bounce off each other and create a healthy, ever-learning environment.”
Combined with experienced leaders who encourage growth, the result is a collaborative culture where people can thrive.
“Add in some amazing leaders that support and encourage growth and the mix you end up with are multiple strong Quantem teams that deliver services to a high standard.”
As the person leading Quantem’s APC training programme, helping colleagues achieve chartership is especially rewarding.
“I’m fortunate enough to head up the APC training programme here at Quantem, which is made easy by the hardworking individuals around me.”
Those connections, he says, have created a strong platform for future growth.
What is the one bit of advice you would give to someone starting their career?
When it comes to building a successful career, curiosity is key.
“Take every opportunity to learn something new and don’t accept the norm.”
That mindset reflects the best piece of career advice Rob has ever received.
“Be engaged in everything you do, you will find fulfilment.”
It’s simple advice, but one that has shaped their own approach throughout their career.
What was the first album you ever bought?
A classic from one of music’s biggest icons. Michael Jackson – HIStory: Past, Present and Future
If you could have any animal, real or mythical, as a pet, what would you choose?
Without hesitation, the answer is a Phoenix. “A pet Phoenix would be fun. It could carry me, it can teleport, it has healing tears, it’s loyal and it never dies. What more can you ask for? What a pet that would make.”
It’s certainly one of the more imaginative answers we’ve had and we’d struggle to argue with the logic!
