Meet Charles Hicks: Delivering Value Through Collaboration and Experience
- 15th October 2026
From watching a new building take shape at school to delivering some of the UK’s early large-scale logistics developments, Charles Hicks has built a career around complex projects, practical problem-solving and creating lasting value.
With more than 30 years of experience in the Midlands, Charles shares what first attracted him to construction, the changing demands of the industrial and logistics sector and why collaboration, curiosity and sound decision-making remain at the heart of successful projects.
What originally attracted you to the construction and property sector, and what keeps you motivated today?
Charles’ interest in construction began at school, when he watched a new building being developed on site.
“Seeing how the various building elements came together, despite the constraints of the site, sparked my curiosity about the complexity of the construction process.”
His interest in industrial and logistics grew after relocating to the Midlands, where he had the opportunity to work on one of the UK’s first Amazon distribution centres.
Today, it’s the variety of projects and the opportunity to work collaboratively with clients and design teams that keep him motivated.
“I enjoy finding practical solutions, balancing quality, cost and programme, and helping turn ambitious ideas into successful developments.”
What do you see as being the biggest challenge facing the sector today?
As technology, automation and robotics continue to evolve, Charles believes one of the biggest challenges is ensuring developments can adapt to future operational requirements.
“Future-proofing developments without compromising current value or functionality is a significant challenge.”
At the same time, he sees a major opportunity for the sector. Industrial and logistics buildings are no longer simply warehouses, but critical infrastructure supporting global trade and supply chains.
This shift is creating opportunities to deliver smarter, more sustainable and resilient developments that can support businesses for decades to come.
What is one common misconception about industrial and logistics developments?
That they’re easy to deliver.
Charles believes the perception of industrial and logistics buildings as simple warehouse projects overlooks the complexity involved in bringing them forward.
“In reality, they are some of the most complex projects to plan and deliver.”
From securing suitable land and infrastructure to navigating planning, environmental and regulatory constraints, successful delivery requires careful collaboration and strategic thinking.
What sets Quantem apart when approaching complex projects or client challenges?
For Charles, it’s Quantem’s collaborative and pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
“We take the time to understand our clients’ commercial objectives and work closely with the wider project team to deliver practical, value-driven solutions.”
The focus is on helping clients make informed decisions, achieve the best value from their investments and deliver complex projects with confidence.
What project are you most proud of?
Charles has worked on a wide range of projects throughout his career, but one that stands out is the delivery of a medical centre in Kettering, Northamptonshire, in 2007.
Although the project was delivered on time and within budget, what made it particularly rewarding was its impact on the local community.
“Seeing how the new facility improved access to healthcare and provided a modern environment for patients and staff demonstrated that construction is about much more than delivering buildings.”
For Charles, it reinforced the importance of understanding the wider purpose behind every development and remains one of the most satisfying achievements of his career.
How do you support emerging talent at Quantem?
Charles believes developing people is an important responsibility, particularly when it comes to sharing knowledge and experience with the next generation.
“I believe that learning is most effective when people understand not only what they are doing, but why they are doing it.”
By providing context around tasks and encouraging colleagues to ask questions, challenge established ways of working and contribute their thoughts, he aims to help emerging professionals develop confidence and commercial awareness.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
“Don’t bring emotion into decision making.”
It’s a principle that reflects Charles’ approach to solving problems and making informed decisions throughout a project.
What advice would you give to someone starting in the industry today?
For Charles, the best advice is to stay open to opportunities and never assume your career will follow a set path.
“The construction industry is incredibly diverse, and your experiences will often lead you in directions you never expected.”
He also encourages people to work with as many different clients, consultants, contractors and colleagues as possible.
“Every project and every person will teach you something new.”
