One year after launching Quantem’s Dubai office, Grant reflects on the opportunities, challenges and lessons that have shaped the journey so far. From establishing a presence in a new market to building valuable relationships, he shares what has made the experience so rewarding and what he’s looking forward to next.
What originally attracted you to the opportunity in Dubai, and has the experience lived up to your expectations?
After more than 14 years with Quantem in the UK, Grant felt the time was right for a fresh challenge.
“I’d always enjoyed visiting Dubai, so the opportunity to help establish and grow our presence in the region was incredibly exciting.”
He was particularly drawn to the ambition and innovation that define the emirate.
“Dubai is very much a best-in-class environment, with ambitious developments, a strong focus on innovation and a genuine desire to push boundaries.”
A year on, Grant says the move has more than delivered on what he hoped for.
“The experience has absolutely lived up to expectations. It’s been challenging at times, both professionally and personally, but the pace, ambition and opportunities available here are unlike anywhere else I’ve worked.”
Looking back, it’s a decision he is very glad he made.
What has surprised you most about working and living in Dubai?
For Grant, one of the biggest surprises has been the collaborative nature of the market.
“Dubai is very much a relationship-driven market.”
From day one, he found people to be welcoming, supportive and willing to help.
“People have been incredibly open to making introductions, sharing advice and helping you succeed.”
Those relationships have played an important role in helping Quantem establish itself in the region.
What project, achievement or milestone from your first year are you most proud of?
Securing Quantem Dubai’s first project stands out as a defining moment.
“Being appointed on our first project was probably the biggest milestone.”
Winning that first fee represented far more than a commercial success — it validated the effort and commitment involved in establishing a business in a new market.
“It’s always nice to win that first fee and validate the effort that’s gone into building a business in a new market, even if it took a little longer than expected!”
Looking back, Grant believes patience was one of the most important ingredients during those early months.
“There were times when progress felt slow, but the relationships built during that period have been some of the most valuable outcomes of the first year.”
Those connections, he says, have created a strong platform for future growth.
What’s one thing you miss most about the UK?
Although he’s embraced life in Dubai, there are a few things Grant still misses from home. “Friends and family, and of course my colleagues…” As for the weather? “I don’t miss the weather, but I do miss London in the summer, standing outside a pub.” As Quantem Dubai celebrates its first anniversary, Grant remains focused on what comes next. While the first year has brought plenty of challenges, it has also reinforced the importance of patience, adaptability and strong relationships. And with the foundations now firmly established, the next chapter promises to be an exciting one.
